pumpkin cutie

We have been cleaning out our storage closet trying to organize all of the Halloween costumes /dress-ups that we own. This may not seem like a small task but we have about six giant rubbermaid containers down there full of just that and wow, it was so out of control. I found this hat that Eileen knitted for Allie a few years ago while on her mission in Philadelphia. So cute! It was just the right size for little Ethan! I am such a dork because later when I was looking at the Pumpkin Patch pictures, I realized that I should've had him wear this to the patch, think of the pictures! For now, we'll just have to enjoy this one. Waynd & Eileen are serving in Africa right now and we are super excited to be counting down the weeks until they get come home, we're down to FIVE! Ethan was six months old when they left, Daniel was one day old and the twins weren't born yet. Besides the babies, all the kids have done a ton of growing up, they will be so excited to see everyone, we are excited too.

fall fun

Today was great weather, not too hot and not too cold and although the sun was shining better earlier this morning than later, it was still perfect for a trip to the pumpkin patch. I LOVE Fridays because the kids have early out from school, I personally feel like this is what their schedule should be all the time because they are in school for too many hours a day, but that's another blog for another day. We drove out to the Pack Family Pumpkin Patch with April and her kids, and Lauri and her kids. So much fun! Ashton wasn't really sure what to think but he mostly smiled the whole time.
I have to say, Ethan LOVED running around the pumpkins and trying to pick them up. It was a good thing that most were too heavy to lift because the ones he could lift, he threw like baseballs! Oh dear! My kids like being able to pick out their own pumpkins, give the little ones wheel barrell rides, (that's Makenna and Ethan in the barrell) run around the maze, ride the horses (although we did not do that this year) and act silly... Some of the pumpkins required some teamwork... Some just required James' muscles...I must admit that my favorite part of this annual trip, are all the great opportunities for pictures! (don't pretend to be surprised by this) The light was not great so most of them ended up kind of flat, but that didn't stop me from taking a few hundred. Here are just a few of my favorites. I need to have Patsy show me how to do a slide show, but until then you just have to scroll down...I love how Spencer is too cool to take out his iPod out for the picture...but my favorite of the day was this cutie shot of little E holding a little pumpkin... By the end everyone was tired, and pictured out (imagine that) and had found their pefect pumpkin, so we took our haul home. No wonder we come back every year, what a great day. Happy Fall!

drama king

A few weeks ago, Spencer came home from school VERY excited to tell me that he had been chosen in his class to play Christopher Columbus in their fifth grade play. He said several boys "auditioned" for the part but he was chosen. Spencer has such a dramatic personality, always over-reacting to everything whether it be good news or bad. His favorite dinner time activity is re-enacting his favorite scenes from various TV programs. He does this until Rich tells him he has met his quota for the night. He worked very hard to memorize all of his lines and was super proud of the costume that he had to wear, he loved the awesome hat especially. This picture was his scene with the queen of Spain who was played by the girl that makes Spencer's heart all aflutter, her name is Kiersten and isn't she cute? (don't tell Spencer I told you this)Ethan and I attended his play this morning and he was GREAT! I did have a hard time getting him to hold still for a picture because all he wanted to do was show Ethan off to his friends and teachers, he loves being a big brother, but eventually I did get a photograph or two, or twenty...I hope he continues to enjoy the stage, it so fits him!

did the dinosaurs have electricity?

Today I was driving Spencer to piano and he said, "I hate piano". This is a conversation we end up having every other month or so, so I am always armed and ready with the, "be grateful" speech. You may think I am a mean mom for making Spencer do piano even though he hates it, but the truth is, he doesn't hate it, he just hates practicing, once he masters a song, he plays it non-stop until everyone in the house cries. This is his third year of piano and right before he started taking lessons we went to a Jon Schmidt concert, if you've never been, you have to try it sometime. He does all sorts of crazy acrobatics like back flips off the piano bench, playing songs with his toes, etc. not your grandma's piano concert for sure. During the concert he played a song upside down and backwards while lying on the piano bench and Spencer thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever seen. On the FIRST DAY of piano lessons, Spencer came home and mastered "Old McDonald had a song" the right way, then, laid down on the piano bench and taught himself how to play it upside down and backwards just like Jon! His piano teacher Emily is great to foster Spencer's creative expression and so at his first piano recital (unbeknownst to me) he played his song once the right way and then again upside down and backwards, infact, notice that Jon's hands are crossed and Spencer's aren't! He actually plays it with the hand parts swapped! It was the highlight of his life, he thought he was the bee's knees I'm telling ya. I'll admit, it was pretty cool and I thought he was the bees knees too. I was impressed then and have continued to be, he really does have a wonderful ability to feel the music, he hardly ever practices with the metronome because he doesn't like the beat being dictated to him, but to be honest, he doesn't really need it so says Emily. Ok, so now you know why I make him take piano, because he really does love it and he's too good this early to let him quit NOT because I'm the meanest mom ever. Now we'll rewind back to in the car on our way to piano, sorry this blog is really two stories in one. So he says, "I hate piano" and I say, "you don't hate piano, you just hate practicing piano and you hate leaving your friends to go to piano". Then I proceed to tell him that when I was a little girl we couldn't really afford piano lessons or any of the other cool stuff that he gets to do so he needs to remember that he is lucky to be able to learn and try different things. (I'm such a mother!) It seemed to work, he's lost in thought for a minute, certainly thinking about the joy he feels playing a song he knows and says to me, "yea mom you're right" (the words every mother longs to hear). So then after a minute of some more deep thinking he says, "I am really lucky for another thing too, when you were growing up there wasn't very much electricity." WHAAAAAAAAAAT!? I was so stunned that I couldn't even laugh or speak, how old to my kids think I am!? I remember feeling like my parents were dinosaurs, but me? I'm so young! Don't they know that my life growing up wasn't all that different than theirs!? Don't they know that I CAN relate to what they're experiencing!? All I could say was "wow" softly under my breath, and it was a good thing that at that moment we pulled up in front of Emily's house and it was time for Spencer to exit the car. My parents I'm sure are happy that karma has finally come back to bite me in the behind. Infact, I think this is them getting a good laugh out of it now...

the warm fuzzies

Yesterday started this time of year for Patsy and I, and we spent the entire school day together trying to get everything off and running smoothly. The SF girl who came to do the kick off assembly for us (thank goodness we don' t have to be in charge of that, sheesh) asked us how long we had been doing SF? We laughed because it's definitely been a while. We decided this was our fifth year in a row of doing it! Really, if you're going to do a volutneer project, this is the one to do, Lauri does it for her school too so Patsy and Lauri and I get to hang out at all the SF meetings during the year. They sponsor a yummy lunch, tons of freebees, it may be the only volunteer job that has tangible benefits I swear! (I mean besides the warm fuzzy feeling that you're doing something good, that's of course a benefit) So, the kick off was yesterday which means I spent all of General Conference stapling and putting labels on packets, no brainer kind of work, but it's all passed out and we can take a deep breath until orders start coming in. The BEST (even better than the warm fuzzies) part of volunteer work, are the relationships you foster with other moms along the way, seriously, Patsy is one of my closest friends and the fact that we volunteer on so many of the same commities is a great excuse to have to hang out together. We had a GREAT lunch at Chipotle with even better conversation. If you haven't checked out Patsy's blog, you definitely should, I'm almost embarrassed to say that I check it every day. I love to know what's goin' on over at Paty's house! She makes me, and you, feel so great, like you are a normal mom with normal challenges and isn't that a breath of fresh air from all the pretending that goes on? And her little guy, Trent is worth reading about, that kid's adventures even make Rich laugh! I just love her to pieces! Now I have to go so I can work on editing her photoshoot from Sunday! PS I have a catalogue if you would like to support our school! :)

conference weekend

What a great weekend! I love conference weekend, I'm saying there's got to be nothing better than hearing from the GAs of the church, so incredibly uplifting, I swear that most of the talks were for me personally! And nothing could be better than being spiritually uplifted in your jammies right? We should do this EVERY weekend! :) It was also the perfect weekend for sitting at home watching conference in your pjs because it rained and rained and rained. The kids and I were all curled up on the couch (we have a really big couch) all under blankets listening to the prophet speak, what a happy memory this will always be for me. Boy do we love this man! And I love this picture of him, you know me and close ups! Look at how much story is in that face and the sparkle in his eyes, wow, he makes me feel overwhelming love. I especially enjoyed Henry B's talk on making a record of the ways that God touches our lives and the lives of our children. I'm going to reflect on the best way to do that but I felt very strongly that he was speaking directly to ME, I love how conference always feels like that, like the messages were prepared special just for my ears. It is a testimony to me that God loves me and that he knows my concerns.

I was nervous about the weather for today, Sunday, after all of the rain over the past few days because I need to take the Patsy's family pictures. I normally try to avoid working on Sundays as much as possible but there are times when Sunday is the only day that large families can pull everyone together. Plus, Patsy is one of my best friends and it didn't really feel like work, I had so much fun! Luckily, the planets aligned and the sun was bright and beautiful today and no re-scheduling was required! I know that she is dying to see her pics, so I will post a sneak preview here...keep in mind that these are the non-edited versions! I need a few days to clean them up nice. As a side note, I need to mention that ever since I first met Patsy and Brett, they were our neighbors and the nicest people you would ever want to know. They have such NICE kids too, so you know they are doing something right in their house! Patsy is always someone I've looked up to because she is so honest about life and motherhood and how challenging it can be. She is very genuine and she makes me feel like a normal, real person when ever I am around her and hear her stories. I appreciate that so much! Ok, so Brian is getting ready to leave on his mission and so we took a few missionary pictures just for fun, and Brian puts the fun in just for fun. I was having hard time taking the photo because I was laughing so hard! What a cool guy, I told Patsy that their family won't be as funny w/o Brian home because he is comedy central for sure. It was definitely one of the funnest photo shoots I've been able to do! Thanks guys

auntie alisa

When I was a little girl, I totally worshiped my cute Aunt Alisa who is my mom's baby sister and only ten years older than me. I remember watching her put her make-up on in the mirror and trying to memorize every little detail so that when I was old enough I could wear my make-up just like her. It's no wonder I idolized her, she is so beautiful, she has always turned heads everywhere she goes and she can get any guy to do anything for her, all she has to do is flash her smile at him, and so of course that's why we hate her, just kidding! She used to come and baby sit us when my mom went out of town and she would tell us that we had to call her "auntie alisa" (with a british accent of course) because she thought auntie was so much cuter than aunt, especially because in America everyone pronounces is like the bug's name. One of my favorite photos is of me laying next to her in the backyard trying to get a suntan. All of the other cousins are playing in the sprinkler, but I was where Alisa was, she was trying to get a tan, so I was too. I'll have to find that pic and edit this post later. She has always been one of my favorite people, except when I was 14 and she lived with us for a little while, but she shouldn't take it personally because I was an onry teenager and didn't really like anybody that year. She is so funny, I mean, tears rolling down your cheeks kind of funny whenever she's around because she tells the best stories and is so animated. She lives in Alaska but visits often and when she comes into town we always have a good time. Tonight was no different, we had a girl's night out, with NO BABIES, yay! Dinner at McGrath's and dessert at Z-tejas (because they have the most awesome dutch oven cobbler) and I'm sure everyone in the restaurant thought we'd had too much to drink (although none of us had had a drop of course) because we were laughing so hard and loud, you know that obnoxious table of people that you hate to sit next to in a restaurant? Yup, that was us, it was so fun, I haven't laughed that hard in a while. I'm going to try to remember that the next time I sit next to that kind of table, they're just having some long over-due belly laughing time. So the funniest thing happened while eating dessert. Leah found a wrapper at the bottom of her cobbler, we all laughed, it wasn't hair so it was kind of funny. The waiter took her's away to get her a new one and then April and I both pulled wrappers out of ours, butter wrappers to be exact. The manager came back with a new one for Leah but April and I told him we were fine with ours, it wasn't that big of a deal, and then the thing that tipped us over the histeria cliff was that Leah pulled out another butter wrapper from the new one that the manager had just brought her! Seriously, I guess you had to be there, but we all about died laughing! We got our desserts for free, I guess that's to be expected, but we left the waiter a great tip because he was a good sport! And he took a picture for us to remember the event. Alisa's in town for the week, so hopefully more good stories are on their way...

bff lauri

I know I blog a lot about this girl, she is my bff after all! Yesterday was Laur's 35th birthday! We celebrated by going to one of our favorite places, Rumbi and had yummy rice bowls. It really wasn't too different than any other day that we go to lunch, just chatted about this and that but there were presents so I guess that's what sets it apart from the ordinary! While I was writing out her birthday card I was having a hard time expressing how I felt without crossing over the ridiculous & cheesey line. I ended up just writing I LOVE YOU! Even though, that doesn't really say it all. At the end we realized that we never took a picture at Rumbi even though I had stuck the camera in the diaper bag for this purpose. So, when I dropped her off at her house, we had an impromptu self portait. One try and this is what we got! Love this girl...

the (not) lost art

Patsy told me I needed to read Jill's blog and I'm so glad I did! She is darling and she inspired me with her Just Because Wednesdays. This is a day to write a note to someone telling them how great they are "just because" and for no other apparent reason. I was tempted to dive in and write everyone I know a just because note but I resisted and decided I would knock people off the list a few at a time. I did not take pictures of the cards because I want the people I send them to to be surprised but I just want to say how great it made me feel to do this! I know it will lift the spirits of the ones I sent them to, but it surprised me by lifting my spirits too! What a great idea. She is also the queen of good mail and this is something I have always enjoyed my whole life (the idea of sending something in the mail to brighten someone's day) and it's nice to know that it's not a lost art. So, if you have a minute, check out Jill's blog, I loved is so much I listed it with my blog faves on the side. And take a second today to write someone a note "just because". Good night!

crazy turban head

I just had to post this picture of Ethan, it makes me laugh so hard! I went up to Ethan's room this morning to check on him, he was sleeping in a little later than usual so I was making sure he was still breathing! You've done that before with your babies right? Anyway, I had to run and grab my camera because it was just too funny. This is Ethan's special blanket, the one that if we lost it we would be in trouble. It was made by my friend Lisa when he was born and it's the one that stuck. We call it the wonder bread blanket because on the reverse side it has all diferent sizes of polka dots like a bag of wonder bread. He likes to rub the crocheted edges on his face so he always falls asleep with it wrapped around his shoulders. Apparently, this time he slid down the pillow and the the blanket did not. I should've photographed his hair after he woke up and took the blanket off, there were some good laughs. Speaking of hair, I know I need to cut his hair, but I know that as soon as I do, he will look more like a little boy and less like a baby and I'm not quite ready for that. So as you view these recent pictures and wonder to yourself, "why is his hair so long and crazy? doesn't Wende own a pair of scissors?" The answer is yes I do and I will use them soon, but for now, I just can't bring myself to do it. Crazy turban head.

more tuesdays with sam and drew

Today was our fourth gathering of the cousins, this time at the Hogle Zoo. It's been a long time since I've been to the zoo, it was my older kids' Kindergarten field trip and Spencer is now in the 5th grade. I remember thinking at the time that we must have the world's most awful zoo, the animals looked like they were slowly and painfully dying in their lame surroundings. I always felt so bad for the zoo animals. I have to say that I am happy about all of the changes they have made, the elephants especially seem much happier and the Asian cat section was so awesome, the lion was always the animal that made me feel the worst, so that is very good news. It also looks like they aren't anywhere near done with the renovations, even more good news. We may not have the lamest zoo any more after they're done with everything.
Ethan was in heaven with the monkeys, he loved being able to go right up to the glass to "touch" them. You can't tell from this picture because of the reflection of the glass, but there is a small monkey just on the other side of Ethan's hands and he is squealing with laughter because he thinks the monkey is just so funny. I tried to turn the flash off but then the pictures just got blurry, I've said before that this blog is to help me let go of the feeling that every picture I take has to be portait perfect, some pictures are just bad but worth posting because they still tell the story. There, I said it. We also found a few other "monkeys" hanging around the monkey cage! Anyway, the elephant display has this huge elephant outside that the boys sat on for picture but the sun shone only on the spot where the boys were sitting on his trunk, making for lame photographs of over exposed faces and squinty eyes. A few minutes later the elephant played a little song and blew water out of his trunk and let's just say that it was a good thing that Ethan was already wearing a diaper because he was so startled, I'm sure he lost bladder control for a moment! Ethan and I stayed for a few more minutes to play at the cool little park after everyone else had to go. He loved this super-steep slide and wanted to go down it over and over and over, even after he flew down it and landed on his back in the bark. No biggie, just brush yourself off and get back on the horse, or slide, which ever the case may be. He also loved this croc but only after I sat on it with him for a few minutes, he was nervous and kept pointing at his teeth, smart boy. I am loving being able to hang with the sister-in-laws for a little while once a week and see how everyone is doing. It's so nice to connect and especially for Ethan to have some interaction with the other little kids. Drew always gets so excited and says to him, "hi Efin"! I love it!

totally cool dorks

Taylor, James & Spencer are self-professed dorks, nerds I think is the word that they actually use and Lauri and I have to agree most of the time. Taylor and James are both in the chess club, both enjoy Star Wars and Nintendo a little too much but neither of them seem to care too much what everyone else thinks, nerds it is and they think it's great. Yesterday there was nothing going on after school which never happens, so Lauri and I traded kids (Allie went there, James came here) and let them play until 8pm, they were in heaven. It was beautiful weather and without even being asked the boys played outside in the back yard for several HOURS. Yes, that's right, they chose out door recreation over electronic entertainment YAY! Maybe I haven't completely failed as a parent... I looked outside and saw them swinging their swords (sticks) at each other and their toy light sabers too and although I rolled my eyes for a minute it also made me very happy to see them so engaged in their make believe battle. I had to run to Target for a sec to grab something I had forgotten for dinner and asked Taylor if Ethan could play outside with them while I ran. His response was "but we're in the middle of a war mom". Oh, pardon me! Later I noticed James hauling all these sticks to the middle of the yard and later I looked out the window and saw this awesome tee-pee that they had built! When I went out there to take a picture, they were putting all of the swords in the middle and informed me that it was not a tee-pee, it was a bon-fire. They were burning all of their weapons because the war was over and they no longer had any use of their weapons. (Hmmm, sound like a Book of Mormon story you've heard before?) Then they told me that they were victorious even over staggering odds, 75 to 1 infact. I smiled to myself, knowing that some day this blog may come back to haunt them and then told them to give me their best warrior faces for the picture. Anyway, like I said, totally cool dorks.

what's that white stuff?

Saturday was a wonderful day, we were able to attend Charity's baptism and it was beautiful of course. I had the chance to spend an hour or so with her a few days ago to do some baptism pictures for her.She is a special girl and we're glad to have her in our family. Josh came with Sydney and the twins BY HIMSELF! He's crazy, we all agreed but we all sure enjoyed holding those babies and telling him to enjoy the break. Matt said it's a Moore thing not to want to accept help from anyone, he may be right but we did our best to break Josh of the guilt. I can't believe how big the twins are getting, I should've snapped a few pictures of them, but Allie was in charge of the camera for most the day so all of the pictures look like this.Nice Allie, very reverent feeling! :) We came home after the baptism to change into warm slippers and spend a nice rainy Saturday in doors doing things around the house and eating soup for lunch. I love cold rainy days like this, it's such a good excuse to not have to go anywhwere...In fact, I spent the afternoon working on some thank you notes that I have been meaning to send, just look at all that GOOD MAIL! And notice my super-cute return address labels that I ordered from good things along with some fun personalized cards. Anyway, I passed by one of our windows and was SHOCKED to see SNOW!Holy crap! Snow? I've lived here for 14 plus years now, and I can't remember it ever snowing in September! None of it stuck and it turned back into rain a little later on, but for like a solid hour, we had giant white flakes that couldn't be mistaken for sleet or slush or anything but the fluffy white stuff. This picture of our backyard doesn't do it justice, it was really coming down heavy, I just couldn't believe it! What do you do? Later we did brave the weather to do dinner at Lonestar with the Merrill's which was just what the doctor ordered, yummy steak and mashed potatoes. Mmmmm...no picture because both of our husbands, and probably Lauri, would've rolled their eyes. People are getting tired of posing for blog pictures!

catch up

I'm so dang tired tonight that I really ought to be in bed, but that was my excuse for not blogging the last several nights in a row, so here I am. I always feel like I have to break up what I'm blogging about so it gets the correct labels, so here I go...
