first day excitement

Because I'm a few days behind in my blogging, the first day of school excitement has worn off a little, it is the third day of school this morning and the kids are just beginning to remember why it was that they enjoyed having their summer off! (Mainly the getting up early part.) But I'm not here to blog about that, I'm going to try to capture a little bit of the first day butterflies and try to convey everyone's (but me) excitement about going back to school. It is kind of a special year for each of them for different reasons.

Of course Taylor was excited because Jr. High is so much more fun than elementary school, according to him anyway. His reasoning for this theory is that there's so much more freedom and they treat you more like an adult there. Plus if there's a teacher that you hate you only have to be with them for one hour and then you're out of that class for the rest of the day. (that's looking at the glass half full) The classes are more fun because you get to do a lot of different things during the day and sit with whoever you want to at lunch. AND you can eat pizza every day if you want, he is generally a home luncher so I'm not sure why this appeals to him so much, maybe just knowing that he could have pizza every day is what's cool about it. He was also much less nervous this year being an eighth grader and having done the seventh grade-nervous-to-start-jr.high-thing already, he knew what to expect and how to find his classes and wasn't afraid of getting a swirly anymore. :) In fact, he came home from the first day and said, "man, the sevvies are so short this year!"

Allie's excitement was centered around one important thing: ruling the school. Sixth grade is the top of the pancake stack when you're in Elementary School still and so she was definitely looking forward to all of the fun things that come with sixth grade, like DARE and the graduation dance and being called on to help the younger grades with various things. She was really sad that Functional Skills is no longer at our school, the sixth grade classes volunteer their recess times (on rotation) to help out in the class with the special needs kids and she was really looking forward to that. She is also part of the Student Council this year and is very excited about the service projects and different things she'll get to do with that. Of course, FRIENDS are a big part of why she is looking forward to the sixth grade, she hung out a lot during the summer but nothing beats being able to spend every day all day with the same girlfriends that she loves. One more thing, the year after second grade, her wonderful teacher Mrs. Bryson moved to sixth grade. Taylor had her two years and ago and Allie was thrilled to get her again, she is really fantastic and we are looking forward to a great year!

Spencer's excitement about school is finally knowing a big group of boys from our ward and finding out that they are ALL, except one, in his class this year for fifth grade! This is a big deal because in our last neighborhood it was a difficult thing for Spencer to try and fit in with a really hard group of boys. This move has been the best for him because he has been surrounded constantly by a great group of boys and so that makes school that much more fun. He also has had a whole year now to get used to being on his own at a different school than Allie (he switched to the new school in our boundary after we moved and Allie stayed) and he finally doesn't feel like the new kid. He also got two of the most wonderful teachers in the universe! Mrs. Snow and Mrs. Lawson team teach fifth grade and I was so impressed last night at Back to School night, I'm excited because I know Spencer will have a fantastic year with them. The school Spencer attends just barely finished an addition to their building and he was excited to find out that the fifth and sixth grades were the ones who got brand new classrooms and they smell so nice and new!

So I guess that's it, it was a crazy morning, the only one NOT looking forward to school starting was me, but that's a blog for a different day. Everyone enjoyed their first day of school and it went off without an incident. Ethan wasn't too happy to be pulled out of bed early but when you're the tail-ender of a family, that sometimes happens. It has been fun to have alone time with Ethan this week, we'll see how much he likes hanging out with only me in a few weeks. Here's hoping for a wonderful 2007-2008 school year!

grandpa's shadow

As I said before in the last post, grandma had a company party last weekend and we all went along for the fun. Ethan had a great time following grandpa around for the entire day. It was fun to watch because it was so easy to see how much he loves grandpa. I kept trying to give my dad a break by taking over and re-directing his attention somewhere else. But every time I turned around, he was following grandpa, or grandpa was following him trying to keep him out of trouble. They both liked the car, in fact it was hard to get Ethan to look at him for a picture because he just wanted to look at the car. They went for walks to see the deer and so it was good that they both wore orange so I could spot them from a long ways off. I'll be honest, Ethan didn't love the swing with grandpa or with me, but later Allie told us we were doing it wrong, she said she swings with him on her lap but she faces him the other way and he loves it. Oh well, next time I guess.Grandpa didn't even mind sharing his sunglasses to try and up the cool factor for little E. What a cool Grandpa and what a fun day for the two of them getting to know each other a little better.

That's a look of a toddler who is thinking "my grandpa ROCKS!" I would have to agree.

grandma's company party

Last weekend my mom's company had a summer party at a ranch and my mom invited us all to come along, (she just wants to show off the grand kids I know it has nothing to do with me).
It was bloody hot outside but the kids had a blast at all of the different activities.
Taylor especially loved the velcro wall. First you adorn this ridiculous suit made completely out of velcro material. Only Taylor could pull off not looking fat in a suit like this!
After you're dressed, it goes like this...

JUMP... JUMP... STICK...WEDGY!

Pretty funny, but it didn't stop him from doing it several more times.

All of them enjoyed rock climbing, and the big slide. The kids took Ethan down the big slide a few times but he wasn't super interested. In fact, the only thing he wanted to do was look at, and touch, the Holiday Inn stock car that was there on display. We looked at it and then left to go do something else and then every time I turned my head, all I had to do was look toward the car and there was Ethan. I thought maybe his obsession with the Disney movie "Cars" was because of the movie, but maybe it really is because he loves cars. It was like a real life Lightning McQueen, only green. At least he had a good time.

I mentioned the heat right? Well, the kids didn't get to swim, we arrived a little too late and so they decided to take advantage of the giant metal trough that was filled with ice and bottled water. Let's just say, a water fight broke out and so my whole reasoning for not wanting to let them swim because I didn't want to drive all the way home with wet children, went right out the window. They might as well have jumped in the pool fully clothed. At least they're cool now. Spencer did not appreciate the water fight as much as Taylor and Allie, but they didn't seem to hold that against him, they seemed to fine with helping him get wet just the same. What a good brother and sister he has, considering his feelings like that. All in all, it was a fun day. I appreciated the time with my mom, we don't hang out as much as we should. We've been lucky this summer to have family in from out of town that we played together a lot more than usual which is of course great. Allie had fun trying to pose us for these pictures. Ethan was grandpa's shadow this whole day, but I will post about that later. I need to get to bed.

teenager in my house

I am so way behind on getting some things blogged, and it's not all going to get caught up tonight but first and foremost I have to blog about the new teenager in my house. Friday was Taylor-bing's thirteenth birthday and it was a super fun day for him. We started off with a traditional birthday breakfast with presents, this is everyone's favorite "new" tradition - even Ethan, lovely bow my darling! (we used to do birthday gifts at night with dinner and there was all this pressure to invite all kinds of family which is so hard for everyone because weeknights are so busy, and then the kids had ten minutes to play with gifts before it was time for bed, which is such a bummer, so we switched to breakfast, it's just our family which is sometimes so nice and the kids can be excited about their gifts all day long because it feels kind of like Christmas!) phew!
He was super excited about a new lacrosse stick w/balls, Monolpoly - the 'here and now' edition, totally cool and also a book of Jack Johnson guitar music which he took with him to guitar today so we'll count that as a good gift too. He went boating with the Merrill's all day and then they came for ice cream and cake Friday night. Then, we celebrated again on Sunday when the Smith's came for dinner to celebrate Taylor, Addie and Ashton's birthdays with, yes, MORE cake and ice cream. All joking aside, I really do love this kid. He is so easy going and he has a heart of gold. Always willing to help out with anything and is such a gentleman. He works hard and is super-motivated when it comes to things he feels passionate about. Something that totally shocked me last year was that he wrote a few songs, good ones! I told him, that's how you get the girls Taylor! You could talk anyone into marrying you if you sing them a song you wrote for them! How could they say no?! So, as scary as it is to think that I am old enough to have a teenager (aaahhh!) I have to say that I wouldn't trade him in, not yet anyway. But I did tell him that just because he is now an official teenager doesn't mean he gets to all of a sudden turn into a turkey and start breaking all the rules. He just nodded. Is that a bad sign?

oreo magic

The kids and I all sat down together for lunch the other day, which is unusual for us because we're always going different directions during the day. Dinner we're pretty good to all be together but lunch is a different story. Anyway, after lunch Allie asked if she could have some Oreos so we all poured a glass of milk and opened a fresh package and put it in the middle of the table. Something magic happened after that, we all sat around the table talking and laughing while we dunked and ate our chocolate goodness. It was such a fun little twenty minutes and I remember having one of those moments where you look around and see your kids for who they really are, fun little people and feeling joy at seeing their oreo-teeth smiles. Then comes that moment when you feel your heart flutter a little and you fight back ridiculously sappy tears because you are flooded with gratitude for the opportunity to be a mother, especially to these darling faces. Way high on the cheese factor I'm sure but true. Unfortunately I only took pictures of Ethan, I wished I would've taken more but I wouldn't have been able to capture that moment anyway so it's probably just as well. Ethan pictures came easily because he was enjoying his first Oreo experience so much. He somehow knew, just like all humans who've ever eaten an Oreo, that you twist of one side and lick the side with the frosting. Then he saw the other kids dunking and of course had to try it. Although we lost a few cookies at the bottom his cup because he insisted on dunking way too long, he's officially an Oreo fan.
I think that the milk mustache and oreo-teeth grin pretty much sum it all up don't they?

blue and red ribbons

This year I decided that it was about time for me to suck it up and enter some of my photographs in the Davis County Fair. It sounds silly I guess because it is just Davis County, but I was worried I would get my socks knocked off by the incredible talent around here. Well, Taylor and Allie both have taken some fantastic pictures this year and I thought that more than anything I wanted them to have the experience of competing (and I thought they would rock!) So, I couldn't very well make them enter w/o entering myself so off to the printer for some foam mounting I went. I was a little discouraged when I looked up the rules and regs because it said that if you sell any of your photographs for money then you had to enter the Professional division - sigh. I was hoping to enter the adult amature division because I thought my chances would be a little better. I ended up entering two different classes, my awesome sunset picture went to landscapes and my cute picture of the twins went to portaiture. Allie entered in the youth division, flower catagory and Taylor entered the youth division for landscapes with an incredible sunset pic he took on Easter while fiddling with the camera trying to get a good pic of Laurel Anne. I thought my picture of the sunset would do well but I wasn't too hopeful about the portait, mostly because most professional photographers take portaits for a living and so I thought that of all the classes, pro portaiture would be swimming with entries, and I was right, tons of really incredible work. We missed the awards breakfast because our Saturday was crazy as usual so we had to wait until we picked our pictures up to find out if they had won anything. To our delight,
Allie won FIRST PLACE in her class,
and Taylor won SECOND PLACE for his class!

As for me? Well, my sunset picture didn't even place! I was kind of bummed until....I saw a BLUE RIBBON on my portait of the twins! HOLY CRAP! I won first place in the pro portaiture class! I seriously can't believe it, and like I said at the beginning, it is just Davis County, it's not like I was invited to do a gallery in New York or anything, but I have to say, it does feel very nice. A little pat on the back and some bragging rights that I really needed. Funny how those things always come when you need them most, huh? So, now we're thinking that since they're already mounted and ready, why not enter them into the state fair? I'll let you know.... Here's to taking great photographs! :)

vampire love

My sister-in-law Jenny recommended, no highly recommended this book that I've been hearing so much about called "Twilight" by Stephanie Meyer. Since I have agreed with every recommendation Jenny has given me so far, I went up onto Amazon and ordered it post haste. It came Saturday afternoon and my poor family has been suffering since then. I just finished and I have to say that it did not disappoint, even with all the hype, it was absolutely fantastic. And...I'm in love with Edward the vampire. That's right, I said it, I'm in love with a vampire. Jenny loaned me New Moon, the next book in the series and I'm excited to dive right in. So, if you want a good but light (it's supposed to be a young adult kind of read) that is extremely intriging from the first couple of pages AND if you want to throw every thing you've ever thought you knew about vampires out the window, then run on out to your book store (the waiting list at the library is like harry potter long) and sink your teeth into this great little number. - sorry, I couldn't resist the vampire joke. Also, one more thing, Jenny told me that on Stephanie Meyer's website you can read the first chapter of the book as told from Edward's perspective. So, I think I'll end this so I can go check that out. Happy reading!

eight years blessed

So, I did a shoot for Natalie for her 8th birthday and it was the easiest shoot I've ever done! She is so photogenic that we got a ton of great pictures in a short amount of time. Lauri came over on Saturday so we could try to put together an invitation to her baptism and I was thrilled with the results, hopefully Lauri was too! (she was) We had SUCH a hard time choosing our favorites and when it came time to upload which ones she wanted for prints, the list was about 30+ which makes me feel so good. I told her next time I will just take crappier pictures so she doesn't have to make such hard decisions! :) I have to admit though, it was hard for me to see Nat all grown up and getting ready to be baptized. Lauri and I have been friends for just about as long as Nat has been alive. Our very first chat came about because when she brought James over for a play date with Taylor (kindergarteners at the time), newborn Nattie was fussy and she asked politely if I would mind if she nursed the baby on the couch. If she only knew what a nursing house this is, she wouldn't have been nervous to ask! Anyway, I was so glad for that because it forced her to stay and for us to talk and we have been best friends ever since. So I look at Natalie and see an eight year friendship, eight years blessed. It's also strange though to think that it's only been eight years, I feel like I've known her forever though, really I probably have.

twin energy

Have you ever tried to photograph three year old twin boys? Well I have, in fact, I tried to yesterday, the operative word in the sentance being tried. I just have to say that these boys had more energy then I have ever seen in my life and at one point after about an hour of trying to get them to smile and look nice and posed, I just started to laugh and got this funny picture. There were two or three (out of 613 - not kidding) pictures that turned out half way decent that they will be able to hang on their wall framed, but most of them look like this. I wish I could bottle their energy and sell it, or maybe better yet, keep it for myself!

blue ribbon dreams

For several years I've thought it would be fun to enter some photographs into the Davis County and even the State Fair. I haven't ever gotten around to it, who knows why, probably because I'm a spaz most of the time and probably missed the deadline for one reason or another. But this year, my kids have been so into photography that I thought we really should enter, because it would be a good experience for them. So, I worked on the presentation part of it in photoshop, giving the photographs a matte and a border and then we had them mounted on foam board which is required for competition. On my way to turn them in, I accidentally smashed my entries in the door of the van, so the corners were squished, I tried hard not to curse in front of Allie but was unsuccessful. We turned in our photographs anyway and tomorrow we find out if we won, or who beat us. We are looking forward to going and seeing all of the photographs on display. Wish us luck...

return of the wildcats

So, the HSM2 party was a success, the girls were so cute dressed up as their favorite characters. We had one Zac Efron, or Troy Bolton I guess, and Allie was Corbin Bleu, if you missed my blog about her Bleu-do you can read about it here.
We also had three very cute Sharpays.
After some popcorn and Skittles the girls settled in to watch the highly anticipated sequal and although it it seemed that Troy and Gabriella were touch and go there for a few minutes, the girls all gave it two thumbs up. FFFEW, that's a relief. I think I'm going to try to send in their pictures to the cast, probably a long shot, but I bet they would get a kick out of it. Especially Corbin to see his girl looke-a-like. The neighbors across the street who I don't know very well, sat outside on their steps laughing the whole time we were out taking pictures. Should I be offended?

sunday games

I don't blog about my husband as often as I should and so even though this is not a super exciting photograph, it makes my heart flutter just a touch. This is a typical Sunday afternoon at our home, Rich at the table with one or all of the kids playing some kind of board game. We try really hard to not have the TV or Nintendo on on Sunday and so of course this means they have to try more conventional ways of entertaining themselves. (aren't we the meanest parents ever!?) Rich is really great to put down the crossword puzzle and rally the troops, sometimes one at a time for a game of Stratego or chess. I know he doesn't think that it's that big of a deal, but it is to them. It's time that they look forward to each week and some day it will be something that they love to do with their own kids. He doesn't give himself enough credit for being a great dad, infact his response when I tell him this is "some days I'm better than others". What he doesn't know is that the kids (and I) think he's great every day.

mini rogue shopping cart

Ethan has been such a pill to take to the grocery store lately. He no longer wants to ride in the kid seat in the cart, he wants to be pushing it just like the grown ups. So, we end up taking twice as much time getting through Target or Dick's Market because I'm trying to steer my toddler-powered shopping cart. So yesterday we were shopping at Fred Meyer, now Smith's Marketplace but it will always be FM to me, and we spotted this Ethan-sized shopping cart and well, you can just guess how big of a hit it was! I was so glad I had the other children with me to help keep him steering in the right direction, because to say that he could take someone out would be an understatement. To Ethan, pushing the shopping cart is a big deal and he means business, old ladies beware. Later when pushing got too boring he enjoyed sitting in the cart and holding on for dear life while Spencer and Taylor took turns pushing him wicked fast through the isles. (I failed to get a picture of this) I'm sure the staff at FM was happy to see me and my mini rogue shopping cart finally leave the building.

high diving dreams

Because we have purchased Cherry Hill passes for the past several summers, my kids are having diving board envy, high diving board envy to be exact. CH has a lot of fun things, but diving boards are not one of them. So when they found out that the Primary summer party (the whole ward was invited) would be a Farmington Pool they were super excited. The pictures did not turn out fantastic, the party was not until 8pm so the light was not great, but some of these silhouette pictures just crack me up. I have such hot dogger children, especially Spencer. He was doing cannon balls and other jumps until I told him I needed some "hot dog" pictures. He knew exactly what I meant and delivered this beauty, what a funny kid. Spencer is such a great source of entertainment in our home, he is constantly saying the funniest things and always trying to be a friend to everyone. He also thinks that being a big brother to Ethan is the best thing since Nintendo.

As soon as Allie saw what was going on she had to try to out-do him with a toe toucher jump. I don't know about you, but I don't remember ever being that flexible in my whole life and if I tried to attempt something like that now, I would likely injure myself.

I have to say that the number one thing I was worried about with this move was my kids adjustment and would we have a good ward for them to grow up in? They have loved every minute of it! Taylor was ordained a Deacon the second Sunday that we were in the ward and they have welcomed him in so great tha scouts is his favorite part of the week. Allie and Spencer both have loads of kids in their age group, all of which are wonderful and have made their adjustment a piece of cake. Their teachers and leaders are great too and even have Spencer loving primary. I'm so grateful for good friends for them to grow up with, I know better than anyone how much of a difference this makes in a teenager's life. Spencer is especially excited because he found out the other day that his 5th grade class has all but one of his church buddies.

corbin hair

I am a lame blogger this last week or so, sorry to all my loyal fans (dad). So tonight is the return of the East High Wildcats, and most importantly, Zac Efron in High School Musical 2! Allie is celebrating by having a few girlfriends over for an official party, complete with red and white balloons (wildcat colors) and a killer invitation made by me (seen left). She asked each of her invites to come dressed as their favorite HSM character and when she found out that everyone was coming as Sharpay, the snotty blond, her and her friend McKayla decided to come as the boys. And so began the transformation. First, McKayla's mom Kristen, who's great idea this was, is a hair dresser, put perm rollers in her wet hair which she wore (not without complaint) for almost 24 hours. This was drama in itself because she looked too ridiculous to leave the house all day today which screwed up our plans to go to the fair.

Finally, about an hour before the party started, we took the rollers out and made all sorts of Annie jokes, I couldn't believe how CURLY her normally stick-straight hair became! I must admit that I was supportive of this make-over but did not have super high hopes for the outcome. Then we teased and hair sprayed and teased and hair sprayed those curls into near EPA pollution restrictions and came up with the Corbin Bleu hair-do. (oh that rhymes nicely) We cannot wait for the other girls to come so we can see how they dressed up. I told Allie that her hair is the funniest thing that I've seen in a long time and she should definitely dress up as Corbin Bleu for Halloween. What do you think? Pretty good match eh?She pretended to not love all the attention she was getting, but I know the truth! Funny girl.

once upon a time there was a boy who never talked...

Several months ago at Ethan's 18 month well-child check up, the doctor recommended an Early Intervention Evaluation to figure out why Ethan is not talking yet. It probably wouldn't be too big of a deal if he had a few syllables but he doesn't even say ma, da or ba or anything like that. I will admit that even though I was trying to calm myself down with thoughts like, "he's the youngest, everyone talks for him", or "he's smart enough to talk, he just doesn't want to yet", there was a part of me that was super nervous to hear something about autism or other developmental issues. When we went for the evalutation, I was shocked at how thorough they were with him, and the different ways they were able to get information from him. Their "tests" were disguised as play time and Ethan loved it. He passed everything they gave him with flying colors and were even impressed by how much he understood even if he doesn't respond verbally. The end result was this, he is a smart little boy who just isn't ready to start talking, but it's clear that there's nothing "wrong" with him developmentally. It was a huge relief, I remember pulling into the Costco parking lot after our appointment and feeling a little teary-eyed as I took a deep breath. I don't think I realized until how really worried I was that something might be wrong. We had our choice to put him in speech therapy, because at the time he was about 11 months behind in that specific area so he definitely qualified for it, or we could try and work with him at home. We decided to go forward with the speech therapy, what could it hurt right and Friday was finally the first day that Jean came to our house to work with Ethan.
He doesn't usually take to strangers so quickly but right away she got down on the floor and pulled out a bag of toys and he liked her from the get-go. He stayed engaged the entire hour that she was here, she was impressed by that. She was surprised that he still isn't using any syllables but gave us some fun games to try to play with him that should encourage him to model what we're doing and eventually start communication verbally. I'm sure that they will come with time, his words I mean, but for now we can just enjoy his funny laugh that comes straight from his belly.

a family of photographers

On Sunday Allie and I were driving in the car on our way to the park to take pictures of Ann & Matt's family and we saw these beautiful sun rays coming through the clouds. Allie got all excited and said, mom do you think I could take a picture of them even though we're in the car? (man do I love this girl) Of course you can! I said, although I was not very hopeful of the result because the windshield really needs a good washing. I was wrong! You can get beautiful pictures through a dirty windshield! (as long as you don't mind a few dirty blotches) Allie has a great eye.

Tonight I was driving home from a paper flower class at Heartland and I noticed the gorgeous pink sunset which I knew Taylor would love to photograph. So, I called Rich on the phone and told him to let Taylor drop whatever he was doing and encourage him to go photograph the sunset (with the camera strap hung securely around his neck of course!). So when I got home I asked Taylor if he got the great sunset shot and he admitted to climbing a tree to try to get a better view (man I love this kid). I haven't worked with Taylor on composition and that kind of thing as much as I've worked with Allie, but after reviewing the 15 or so pictures he took I could see that he walked around to several different places around the neighborhood and house trying to get the best shot. He didn't just stand in one place and take fifteen of the same pictures (which I'm so guilty of sometimes). One thing I will say is he not afraid to work (or climb trees) to get the good picture!
As for my photo shoot with Ann and her family, well, Daniel was not so happy about having his picture taken except during the rare moment that Allie could get him to forget for a second that his mother was not holding him and make him smile. Max is in the stage that all kids go through where they're concerned about how their smile looks so they try too hard to smile and end up looking worried. No matter how we tried to make that boy laugh, it just didn't quite work. And darling Sammy was distracted by everything else around him, feathers, sticks, ducks, etc. So, needless to say, I've had better shoots, but it sure was fun to hang with the Fanks for an evening and we did get some good pics, but these are actually some of my favorite kind of shots because they tell such a funny story about each personality. This is the best part of my job.
